Corsi di inglese: Australia o Canada? Differenze chiave

20 dicembre 2024·7 min

Australia and Canada are the two most sought-after destinations for studying English abroad. Both offer top-tier academic quality, multiculturalism, and options to work while studying. But there are important differences that can tip the balance.

Estimated total cost (6-month course + living)

  • Australia: AUD 18,000-25,000 (~USD 12,000-16,500)
  • Canada: CAD 15,000-22,000 (~USD 11,000-16,000)

Australia tends to be slightly more expensive in accommodation, but part-time wages are higher.

Visa cost

  • Australia (Student Visa 500): AUD 2,000
  • Canada (Study Permit): CAD 150

Canada clearly wins on this point.

Work while studying

  • Australia: up to 48 hours every 2 weeks during classes, unlimited on vacation. Minimum wage ~AUD 24/hour.
  • Canada: up to 24 hours/week during classes, full-time on vacation. Minimum wage ~CAD 17/hour.

In Australia you earn more per hour, but Canada gives you more weekly flexibility.

Climate

  • Australia: warm climate most of the year. Sydney and Brisbane have mild winters.
  • Canada: very cold winters (-10°C to -25°C in Toronto/Montreal). Vancouver is milder but rainy.

If you come from a warm climate, Australia is a kinder transition.

English quality

Both countries have clear and understandable accents. Australian English has some unique expressions ("g'day", "no worries") but is 100% intelligible. Canadian is very close to standard American.

Post-study opportunities

  • Canada: has the famous Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) if you complete a program longer than 8 months. It's the gateway to permanent residency.
  • Australia: offers the Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) if you complete a university program, not just language.

For long-term residency, Canada has clearer paths.

Which to choose?

  • Choose Australia if: you want warm climate, better hourly wage, a "beach life" experience, and you don't mind the visa cost.
  • Choose Canada if: cold climate doesn't scare you, you want a cheaper visa and clear paths to residency, you prefer to be near the United States.
